Looking Ahead
The future begins in this moment...
They sat together on the back steps after midnight; the sky stretched above them like a book written in a language they were only just beginning to learn. The air held that quiet electricity of things unspoken but already true, the kind of charged silence that makes your skin tingle and your breath pause.
Matthew rested his hand on her knee, half lost in thought, squeezing her in a rhythm he didn’t fully notice at first.
“What do you think the future looks like for us?” he asked, voice low, as if the question itself might tilt the world. The words were soft, but his breath warmed her cheek. She felt the weight of everything he wasn’t yet saying.
Nikki didn’t answer right away. She tilted her head back, letting the stars light up her skin. The movement exposed the line of her throat, long and vulnerable, and he felt a quiet pull toward her pulse. The night breeze lifted a strand of her hair, brushing it against his ear, and he shivered.
“I think,” she said slowly, “that we’re walking toward a version of ourselves we haven’t met yet. And for me? I can feel her. She feels… familiar.”
Her voice carried something low and warm. Like she wasn’t just imagining a future but already half-inhabiting it.
Matthew smiled at that. This was her definitive way of slipping between the literal and the cosmic as if there were no border, as if the universe itself were just another room they could step into whenever the conversation called for it. His hand stopped squeezing.
Nikki leaned into him, her chestnut eyes bright with something that he couldn’t quite name. “I am so excited for everything that is yet to happen,” she whispered. Her lips grazed the edge of his jaw as she spoke, just enough to make him inhale sharply. “Because every time I imagine it, I realise the future isn’t waiting for us to arrive. It’s unfolding because we’re choosing our path. We are the architects of our own little world.”
Her fingers slid between his, warm and certain, and he finally let himself breathe again. “So it’s already happening,” Matthew said, the words rougher now, shaped by the closeness of her mouth and the weight of her body leaning into his.
“Yes,” Nikki replied, gripping his hand. “And the best part? We haven’t even touched the horizon yet.”
And then slowly their faces tilted toward each other. Her breath brushed his mouth, warm and trembling with everything she hadn’t dared to say aloud. His hand rose to her jaw, and she leaned into it, knowing how safe she was in that moment.
This was more than just about getting close.
When their lips finally met, it was a long, unfolding kiss. Gentle at first, then deeper, richer, as if both of them were learning the shape of what was to come through each other’s mouths. She now leaned into him fully, fingers curling at the back of his neck, inviting him closer, keeping him there.
The kiss stretched, lingering until the world around them disappeared, leaving only the slow burn of shared breath and the promise of the future pulsing between them.
Looking Ahead (lyrics)
We sit where the night keeps its promises low,
Dreams spread out wider than the fields we know.
Your hand in mine feels like the start we should mark,
A quiet confession wrapped in the dark.
Every breath we take writes a little more sky,
And I feel tomorrow leaning close as you sigh.
I’m so excited for everything that is yet to happen,
You whisper it soft, but it hits me like fire.
The road is a ribbon still waiting for footsteps,
And I’ll walk it with you, burning with desire.
Looking ahead… looking ahead… with you.
We talk in stars, we speak in half-formed visions,
Building constellations out of quiet decisions.
Your shoulder against mine feels like prophecy,
A future unfolding where we’re meant to be.
Every touch you give makes the horizon rise,
Calling us forward with its silver-lined tide.
I’m so excited for everything that is yet to happen,
Your voice turns the night into something alive.
The earth rearranges when you lean closer,
And every tomorrow begins to arrive
Looking ahead… looking ahead… with you.
Maybe the stars don’t know our names yet,
But they echo the shape of how we fit.
Every choice, every kiss, every promise,
Moves the future a little closer to us.
I’m so excited for everything that is yet to happen,
The words are a vow pressed warm on my skin.
If the world keeps opening right before us,
Then love is the doorway we’ll keep walking in.
Looking ahead… looking ahead… with you.
